Koltay, Dr. Peter

Dr. Koltay studied physics at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg and at the Eötvös Lorand University in Budapest. In 1996 joined the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems in Freiburg, to conduct his doctoral thesis under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Joachim Luther. Parallel to his thesis Dr. Koltay conducted studies for a Master's degree in Business Administration at the University of Hagen.

In 1999, Dr. Koltay took a position as assistant lecturer at the Department for MEMS Applications at IMTEK and moved into the field of microfluidics. There, he started to establish the group, "microfluidics simulation" which deals with the simulation and modeling of microfluidic systems in general. Parallel to this activity, he was researching new methods for the dosage of micro-droplets and other non-contact liquid handling technologies.

In April 2005, Dr. Koltay founded BioFluidix GmbH  to develop the dispensing technologies of IMTEK into commercial products. Dr. Koltay was heading BioFluidix as managing director until 2016. In 2014, together with PhDs of his group, he founded cytena GmbH to commercialize a new technology of single cell printing.

In October 2005, Dr. Koltay was appointed to become a professor of "Fluid Technology / Microfluidics" at the University of Rostock. In order to be able to continue his activities he refrained from accepting the professorship and stayed at IMTEK. Since March 2006, he belongs to the permanent faculty staff of IMTEK and works as senior scientist at the chair for MEMS applications and managing director of BioFluidix. In 2013 he was promoted to  academic councilor. He is member of  microTEC Südwest (section Functional Printing Technologies) and speaker of the 3D-Bio-Net consortium. Since 2015 he is co-organizer of MFHS (Microfluidic Handling Systems) and since 2018 member of “FIT Freiburg Center for Interactive Materials and Bioinspired Technologies” and “F3D – Freiburg 3D-Printing Alliance”.

His special interests in microfluidics research and teaching are in the following areas:

  • Development of new technical methods for micro dispensing and quality control of droplet dosage systems

  • Volumetric measurement technique for precise determination of liquid volume in sub microliter range

  • Theory and simulation of droplet formation, free-jet dispensing and all kinds of two-phase flow with free surfaces in a variety of applications

  • Inkjet-like printing of biological cells for single cell analysis and bioprinting applications

  • Autonomous, miniaturized systems for microfluidic processing of liquids (e.g. cell- minibioreactors)

  • 3D-bioprinting for fabrication of in-vitro organ models and artificial tissue

  • 3D-printing of liquid metal and heterogeneous multi composite materials

  • Direct plating in additive fabrication of electronic components
