BIOSS

Many human illnesses are caused by defective or deregulated cellular signalling paths. A fundamental understanding of these processes is therefore an important factor for the progress of biological and medical research.

In the cluster of excellence Centre for Biological Signalling Studies (BIOSS), IMTEK researchers help to develop new technological tools that contribute to acquiring a more thorough understanding of how individual cells react to substances in their environment and how they process these signals in their interior.

BIOSS joins together several of the University of Freiburg’s departments and faculties and is funded by the excellence initiative of the DFG with a budget of €32 million. BIOSS researchers working in the fields of biology, medicine, and chemistry cooperate with engineers active in the fields of microsystems engineering and computer science.
